Because I Said Sew: An Introduction to Sewing" will get you up close and personal with your sewing machine.
Topics to be covered include (but are not limited to) the following: • Threading the machine • Winding a bobbin • Understanding machine settings (stitch length, stitch width, tension, etc.) • Common troubleshooting • Machine needles: types of needles and how to change them • Machine feet: types of feet and how to change them • Common stitches and their uses • How to sew fringe, snap tape, and zippers on a machine Dig that old machine out of the closet and bring it on down for hands-on experience and professional advice "tailored" (Get it?) to your specific device. Tables and outlet strips will be provided. Don't have your own machine? Don't worry! A small number of shared machines will be available for use. The workshop is taught by Jeanie King, a public family and consumer sciences educator and professional costumier with over 30 years of sewing instruction experience and Siren Santina, a burlesque performer with years of costume construction experience. |

"Because I Said Sew: The Sewing Studies Continue" picks up where our last course stopped. Now that you know the ins and outs of your sewing machine, learn all about patterns and fabrics. Gain the skills to make your own garments completely from scratch!
Topics to be covered include (but are not limited to) the following: • Selecting and purchasing patterns • Selecting and purchasing fabrics • Reading, understanding, and using patterns • Layout and cutting of pattern pieces and fabric • General garment construction following pattern instructions • ... AND MORE! Feel free to bring any projects you are working on or have questions about and any patterns you are interested in sewing in the future. A suggested "first project" pattern is Butterick B4790. It is a very fast, simple dress based on a 1952 pattern. Machines are not required for this course, but are welcome. Tables and outlet strips will be provided. A small number of shared machines will be also available for use.
